Coming Soon: Sheba Intelligence Investigates Yemen’s “Gold Route” — from Unlicensed Workshops to Official Exit Points

   Sheba Intelligence is preparing to publish a special investigation tracing how gold may be moving out of Yemen through airports and official exit points in areas controlled by the internationally recognized government, based on documents and data reviewed by the platform.
The investigation follows a late-May security operation in Hadramawt, eastern Yemen, where local authorities announced the dismantling of several unlicensed and illegal gold-mining and processing workshops in the city of Mukalla. The incident raised wider questions about the fate of gold extracted, processed, or traded outside official channels.
But the investigation goes beyond the unlicensed workshops. It asks deeper questions: What happens to gold after it is extracted or collected? Who controls its routes? And how capable are official institutions of monitoring the movement of precious metals in a country weakened by war, institutional fragmentation, and limited financial and customs oversight?
The investigation examines whether some gold movements fall within regulated and transparent trade — or whether oversight gaps have allowed airports and official exit points to become quiet corridors for the departure of national wealth.
