Despite UN Envoy's Presence in Marib, Displaced Camps Attacked

The Ansar Allah (Houthi) group launched on Wednesday evening a rocket attack on the camps of the internally displaced persons, wounding one woman and damaging many shelters in Alwadi district of Marib province, a local source said.

According to the source, four rockets hit some displacement camps, and Al-Minin Al-Qibli camp sustained serious damages. This attack coincides with the UN envoy's first visit to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, who arrived in Marib yesterday.

The arrival of the UN envoy in Marib created a stronger hope for a peaceful solution. However, the Houthi rocket attack indicates that civilians, mainly the displaced, are not safe from shelling even if the UN officials are in Marib city.

The Marib-based Executive Unit for the Displaced Persons Camp Management described the attack on the displaced camps as "horrific and terrorist". It also called on international organizations to assist and protect the displaced families that such attacks have hurt.

Since the breakout of the war in 2015, Marib received over 2 million internally displaced persons. Government reports have said that the province houses over 139 camps, and 70% of the displaced are in Marib City.

In November 2021, Houthi ballistic missiles killed and wounded at least 29 civilians, mainly displaced persons living in a religious school in Al-Jwba district of Marib. As the war continues, the suffering of the displaced people is set to persist. The displaced have escaped conflict-stricken areas, but missiles keep chasing them, destroying their shelters, harming their bodies, and taking their souls.
