IOM: Over 27,000 Yemenis Displaced Since January 2023

 

The United Nations-affiliated International Organization for Migration (IOM) has revealed that over 27,000 Yemenis have been displaced since the beginning of the current year. In a report issued Monday, the organization stated that its displacement tracking matrix recorded the displacement of 4,600 families, representing 27,600 individuals, from January 1 to September 30, 2023. In its weekly report on displacement operations, the United Nations organization documented the displacement of 49 families, representing 294 individuals, who had fled from Taiz, Al-Bayda, Al-Jawf, and Al-Hudaydah. Over 4 million Yemeni people have been displaced since the breakout of the civil war in 2015.

 

The Yemeni army announced today, Monday, the downing of drones belonging to the terrorist Houthi militia that attempted to target their positions in the Sa'ada province in northern Yemen. The state-run Saba News Agency quoted military sources in the Alab Axis in the Baqim district of Sa'ada as saying, "The air defenses shot down drones through which the militias attempted to target the army's positions in Baqim." A Houthi attack targeted army forces in Baqim two days ago when they organized a military parade, celebrating the 61 anniversary of 26 September Revolution. One soldier was killed, and many others were injured.

 

Over 20,000 displaced families in Yemen have been affected by harsh climate conditions, including heavy rains and accompanying floods, since the beginning of the current year, according to a recent United Nations report. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) stated in a report released yesterday, Sunday, that "harsh weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and floods, have affected 20,300 families, consisting of 142,100 individuals in 19 governorates from January to September 2023."  The UNFPA said it provided life-saving assistance to 28,897 displaced families, consisting of 202,279 individuals, between January and September 2023.

 

Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, discussed with Qatari officials the support for UN mediation efforts to resolve the crisis in Yemen. The UN envoy's office stated in a statement today, Monday, that " Grundberg met with the Minister of State for International Cooperation, Lolwah Al-Khater, and other Qatari officials to discuss the importance of enhancing regional and international support for UN mediation efforts in Yemen." The discussion addressed the progress made in supporting the Yemeni war rivals to agree on measures to improve living conditions in Yemen, commit to implementing a nationwide ceasefire, and resume a comprehensive political process under the auspices of the United Nations.

 

Fadl Ba'ash, the former Southern Special Security Forces commander in the provinces of Aden, Lahij, Abyan, and Al-Dhale, survived an assassination attempt on Monday in Abyan province. A car booby-trapped car was parked on the side of the road in the city of Zinjibar, the capital of the Abyan province. According to the source, the explosion injured five soldiers from Ba'ash's bodyguards, in addition to damage to their vehicles. The security source indicated that the explosion bears the hallmarks of the Al-Qaeda terrorist group, which is believed to be behind the attack. Al-Qaeda operatives have a considerable presence in Abyan province.
