Migration and Displacement Exacerbate Humanitarian Situation in Yemen

 

Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalek on Saturday discussed challenges faced by migrants and issues of internal displacement during his meeting with a delegation from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Aden. Abdulmalik emphasized the role of international assistance to Yemen in addressing these challenges and supporting efforts to accommodate refugees and manage the issue of internally displaced persons. Abdulmalek said the migration and internal displacement exacerbate Yemen's deteriorating humanitarian situation.

 

The Yemeni Parliament gives the government a 2-week ultimatum to fix what it says is an illegal partnership agreement with a UAE-based technology company. The Parliament indicated the government had committed many violations in multiple sectors, particularly electricity and telecommunication. The Parliament directed the government to correct these issues and implement recommended actions within two weeks.

 

On Saturday, Major General Sultan Al-Arada, Marib Governor and a member of the Presidential Leadership Council, said that the Ansar Allah (Houthi) group will not submit to peace and will continue gaining time to achieve his interests. In a broad meeting with government officials and army generals in Marib city, Al-Arada said the Houthi group's project is eroding from the inside and suffers from internal problems. He indicated that regaining power from Houthis will happen through UN-mediated negotiations or the army and popular resistance.

 

Sudan's Sovereign Council President, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, visited Egypt on Saturday, marking the beginning of a regional tour that also includes Saudi Arabia and the UAE. This is Al-Burhan's first foreign visit since the outbreak of the military conflict with the Rapid Support Forces in mid-April last year. Since April this year, Sudan has seen bloody and violent clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.

 

Qatar's Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman, expressed hope for an extended US-Iran dialogue on the nuclear program. During a lecture at the IISS in Singapore, he emphasized Qatar's role as a mediator in the latest prisoner exchange agreement between Iran and the US. He said the prisoner exchange agreement will facilitate a more comprehensive discussion on the nuclear deal between the two countries.
