Yemeni Government Accuses Houthis of Nearly Causing Passenger Aircraft Disaster at Aden Airport
The Yemeni government accused the Houthis of endangering dozens of passengers after two missiles struck Aden International Airport as a Yemenia Airways aircraft was preparing to depart for Cairo, marking the second attack on the airport in nine days.
Yemeni Information Minister Muammar al-Eryani said the missiles landed approximately 500 meters from Yemenia flight IY 612 and just 100 meters from the center of the runway, warning that the attack could have caused a major humanitarian disaster.
According to Yemen’s Ministry of Transport, the attack also coincided with the arrival of another aircraft operated by Fly Aden from Cairo. The Yemenia aircraft was evacuated as a precaution to protect passengers.
Al-Eryani condemned the attack as a direct threat to civilian lives and aviation safety and a violation of international law. He emphasized that Aden International Airport serves as a vital gateway for millions of Yemenis, particularly patients seeking medical treatment abroad, students, and expatriates.
The airport was previously targeted in a similar attack on October 7, forcing a Yemenia Airways flight arriving from Cairo to divert to Jeddah. The latest incident comes amid escalating missile attacks that the Yemeni government attributes to the Houthis against civilian infrastructure.
