Yemen: Civilian Market Hit in Taiz as Military Offensive Against Houthis Intensifies
Yemeni military reports 1,211 new targeting operations and 387 Houthi personnel neutralized, bringing the cumulative number of reported operations under “Dawn of Yemen” to more than 41,000 since early October.
Yemen's Ministry of Defense accused the Houthis on Friday of launching a ballistic missile at Al-Hadhara market in Al-Wazi’iyah district, Taiz governorate, reportedly killing and injuring dozens of civilians as government forces continued military operations across Taiz, Marib and southwestern Yemen.
The reported attack came amid intensified fighting under Operation Dawn of Yemen, with government forces announcing 1,211 new targeting operations against Houthi positions, concentrations, reinforcements and military equipment.
According to the military statement, the operations involved fighter aircraft, drones, field artillery and multiple rocket launchers.
Civilian Market Strike in Taiz
The Yemeni Armed Forces' official spokesperson accused the Houthis of targeting the crowded market in Al-Wazi’iyah with a ballistic missile, describing the attack as a war crime requiring accountability.
The statement called on the international community to take action to protect civilians, restrict weapons supplies and disrupt the group's sources of financing.
The Houthis, however, blamed the Saudi-led coalition for the attack, presenting a conflicting account of the weapon used and the party responsible.
The circumstances of the strike and responsibility for civilian casualties have not been independently established.
Government Forces Report Gains in Taiz and Tur Al-Bahah
Government troops and allied resistance fighters continued operations along the Al-Shaqab and Al-Aqroud fronts in Taiz, particularly around Sanamat and Al-Sarari.
Military officials said government forces struck Houthi positions and movements, forcing several groups to retreat with support from fighter aircraft and drones.
In the Tur Al-Bahah sector, units from the Nation's Shield Forces and the Giants Brigades reportedly captured additional positions and repelled Houthi attacks and infiltration attempts.
The developments follow several days of fighting across southern and western Taiz, where government forces have sought to consolidate recently captured positions and expand pressure on Houthi defensive lines.
Offensive Operations in Marib
In Marib governorate, government forces reported offensive operations against Houthi positions in the Raghwan and Mahzam Mas sectors.
Military units also targeted reinforcements, defensive fortifications and firing positions.
According to the Yemeni Armed Forces, operations across the fronts resulted in approximately 387 Houthi fighters and commanders being neutralized, while 96 military vehicles and pieces of equipment were destroyed or disabled, along with a missile launch platform.
The reported casualty and equipment-loss figures could not be independently verified.
Cumulative Figures: More Than 41,000 Targeting Operations
The cumulative number of reported targeting operations under Operation Dawn of Yemen has surpassed 41,000 since the offensive began in early October 2026.
Based on military figures compiled by Sheba Intelligence through November 5, and incorporating the latest announcement, the preliminary cumulative total now exceeds 41,338 targeting operations, with more than 20,795 Houthi fighters and commanders reportedly neutralized.
In its November 5 report, Sheba Intelligence documented the offensive surpassing 40,000 targeting operations, alongside government advances in Al-Jawf and Taiz.
Those advances included the capture of positions in Umm Lafifah, Qurun Al-Sabir and Duhaydat Al-Aqir in Al-Jawf, as well as gains around Sanamat in Taiz.
The figures represent reported military targeting activities involving aircraft, drones, artillery and rocket systems. They should not be interpreted as the number of individual airstrikes.
All cumulative figures remain preliminary and are based on government military statements and previous Sheba Intelligence reporting, rather than independently verified battlefield assessments.
Military Pressure and Civilian Risks
The latest developments suggest that government forces are maintaining simultaneous military pressure across several fronts, particularly in Taiz, Marib and Al-Jawf.
The reported strike on Al-Wazi’iyah market has also drawn attention to the growing risks faced by civilians as fighting expands across populated areas.
While the number of reported military operations continues to rise, the offensive's longer-term significance will depend on the government's ability to secure captured positions, maintain supply routes and translate sustained firepower into lasting territorial gains.
Establishing responsibility for the market strike will require an independent examination of the available evidence, including the type of munition used and its origin.
