Two explosions were reported near Sana’a International Airport on Sunday as flight-tracking platforms continued to monitor an Iranian Mahan Air aircraft heading toward the Houthi-controlled capital, amid a sharp escalation between Yemen’s internationally recognized government and Iran.

Local witnesses said two blasts were heard from the direction of the airport. The nature of the strikes, the targets, and the extent of any damage were not immediately clear, and no official statement had been issued at the time of publication.

Flight-monitoring data indicated unusual activity at Sana’a Airport before the Iranian aircraft’s expected arrival. A large civilian aircraft landed at approximately 9:10 a.m. and departed at 10:07 a.m., while a small United Nations aircraftarrived at around 1:00 p.m. and remained at the airport at the time this report was prepared.

Meanwhile, public flight-tracking platforms continued to follow Mahan Air Flight IRM1199 (W51199) after it departed Tehran and entered Yemeni airspace en route to Sana’a, despite warnings from the internationally recognized government.

The developments came only hours after Yemeni Defense Minister Tahir Al-Aqili said that “patience has run out,” warning that the armed forces would respond to any further violation of Yemen’s airspace and sovereignty “using all available means.” The government also held Iran fully responsible for any escalation resulting from unauthorized flights to Sana’a.

At the same time, Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad Al-Alimi intensified diplomatic contacts with permanent members of the UN Security Council ahead of an emergency session requested by Yemen to discuss what the government describes as an Iranian violation of national sovereignty.

The sequence of explosions, intensified airport activity, the continued presence of the UN aircraft, and the Iranian flight’s advance toward Sana’a indicate that the coming hours may be decisive. The situation could develop into a broader confrontation if Iranian flights continue outside coordination with Yemen’s internationally recognized authorities.
