Saudi Arabia Denies Killing Migrants at Yemen Border

 

Saudi border guards killed "hundreds" of Ethiopian migrants and asylum seekers crossing the Yemen-Saudi border between March 2022 and June 2023, Human Rights Watch alleged in a report released Monday. The organization said it interviewed 42 Ethiopian migrants and asylum seekers and analyzed over 350 videos and photographs posted to social media and satellite imagery. According to HRW, Saudi border guards have used explosive weapons indiscriminately and shot migrants at close range, including women and children. A Saudi government official said the HRW's allegations are unfounded and unreliable. 

 

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani, said Iran will soon activate the joint committee for economic cooperation with Saudi Arabia, Iranian media reported on Monday. This decision follows a visit by Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdollahian to Jeddah upon an official invitation from Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan. Discussions during the visit covered trade concerns and the revival of agreements.

 

On Monday, President Rashad Al-Aleemi inaugurated tourism projects in Yemen's Al-Mahra during his ongoing visit to the province. He opened the Marina Touristic and Residential City and put the foundation stone for asphalting the nearby roads. The project spans a million square meters, costing $100 million. It will include over 100+ residential units.

 

The Ansar Allah (Houthis) have escalated their bombardment of villages in Yemen's Marib, Lahj, Dhale, and Taiz provinces over the past 48 hours, reported local media. Residents said that Najema Mubarak Ali was grazing livestock next to her home in the Al-Markhaza region of Dhale, and she was shot in both legs by a Houthi sniper. According to media reports, dozens of artillery shells struck villages in the Mawiyah District in Taiz, destroying homes and farms and killing several animals. 

 

Some districts of Aden in South Yemen witnessed popular protests and riots on Monday evening, denouncing the collapse of electricity service in Aden, local sources said. According to the sources, citizens had recently blocked main roads with tires in Sheikh Othman district in protest against the deterioration of the electricity sector. Khormaksar district also witnessed angry rallies, and roads leading to Aden International Airport were blocked. The General Electricity Corporation in Aden said the electricity service interruption happened due to the shortage of fuel.
