Yemen Government Says Houthis Attempted to Assassinate Army Chief of the Staff in Marib

The Yemeni government said that the Houthi group is behind the assassination attempt on the Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Saghir bin Aziz. Information Minister Muammar Al-Eryani said the assassination attempt was carried out by detonating a car bomb while bin Aziz’s convoy was passing on the international road upon his return to the city of Marib. Al-Eryani added that this attack came after political and media incitement campaigns launched by the Houthi group, targeting Lieutenant General Saghir bin Aziz. Al-Eryani stressed that this attack will not affect the efforts of the state, the Ministry of Defense, and the Chief of General Staff to develop the capabilities of the military institution, naval forces, and coastal defense, train, qualify, and support them to carry out their duties in confronting the plans of the Houthi group.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis said they had launched on Monday a fresh drone attack against Israel as they step up a campaign of disruptive strikes during Israel’s war with Hamas. Israeli authorities did not immediately confirm the attack, which is the latest in a series of Houthi drone launches in recent days. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said on X, formerly Twitter, that “the Yemeni armed forces… launched a batch of drones during the past hours at various sensitive targets of the Israeli enemy in the occupied territories.” Last week, the Houthis claimed a drone attack and said they had carried out three earlier strikes with drones and ballistic missiles.

Despite the "ceasefire" witnessed in Yemen and the reduced intensity of confrontations on the battlefronts over a year and a half, the Houthi group has not ceased its military escalations and mobilization in the contact areas. Funeral processions for their fighters who have lost their lives in various confrontations with government forces on different fronts have also continued. The Houthi group (from April 1, 2022, to July 15, 2023) has buried the bodies of 1850 Houthi fighters. The group has announced these names through their media outlets, including "Al-Masirah" and "Saba News Agency".

Israel said on Tuesday its forces were operating deep in Gaza City in their battle to wipe out Hamas in the Palestinian enclave, and that the Islamist militant group's leader was trapped inside a bunker. Gaza residents said earlier that Israeli tanks were positioned on the outskirts of Gaza City, Hamas' stronghold in the north of the territory and home to about a third of its 2.3 million people before the hostilities. Israel previously said it had surrounded Gaza City and would soon attack it to annihilate Hamas fighters who assaulted Israeli towns across the border one month ago.
