Yemen Teachers Renew Their Call for Releasing Their Salaries

The Yemeni Teachers' Union said the situation of Yemeni teachers in Houthi-controlled areas is "tragic and dismal" today as they have not been paid their salaries for seven years. The union called on the international community, humanitarian organizations, and human rights groups to pressure the Houthis for immediate disbursement of salaries. This statement was made on World Teachers' Day, which falls on October 5th every year. The union stated, "The occasion of World Teachers' Day (October 5th) comes while Yemeni teachers have been living for over seven years without salaries, … bringing immense suffering and severe hardships to them and their families." Since 2016, teachers in Houthi-controlled areas have not received their salaries. The Houthis say it is the responsibility of the Yemeni government to pay public employees' salaries.

Today, Thursday, Houthi militias targeted a displaced camp north of Marib city in eastern Yemen with a Katyusha rocket, coinciding with the visit of the UN Special Envoy's military advisor, Antony Hayward, to the province, local sources said. The missile landed near the tents of displaced people, and no human casualties were reported. Houthi shelling on the displaced camps in Marib has been recurrent despite the ceasefire-like situation that has prevailed since October last year.

US naval forces for years have been seizing weapons believed to be from Iran bound for Iran-backed fighters in Yemen, usually transported by fishing vessels. The US has sent Ukraine more than one million rounds of Iranian ammunition that had been seized last year, the US military said on Wednesday. US Central Command, which is responsible for military operations in the Middle East, said about 1.1 million 7.62 mm rounds were sent to Ukraine. The ammunition is unlikely to make a major difference on the battlefield at a time when long-range weapons and air defense systems are the top priority for Ukraine.

The Houthi group continued its arrest campaign against Yemenis celebrating the September 26th Revolution anniversary and apprehended on Wednesday more than 12 young individuals in the al-Sabeen Square, according to human rights sources and families. Earlier, the group released dozens of individuals detained for raising the national flag and participating in the celebrations commemorating the September 26th Revolution. Activists and lawyers reported that the Houthi Interior Minister, Abdulkarim al-Houthi, ordered the release of 40 detained youth on charges related to raising the national flag and participating in the popular celebrations.

On Thursday, Major Sultan bin Ali Al-Arada, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council and Marib governor, announced his willingness to open the roads connecting Marib to Sanaa and Al-Bayda provinces if the Houthi group agrees to do the same. This statement came during a meeting in Marib with the military advisor to the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Brigadier General Anthony Hayward, and his accompanying team. He added that the Yemeni government supports all regional and international efforts to achieve genuine peace that meets the people's aspirations.
