Houthis Test Western Coast Defenses as Escalation Nears Bab al-Mandab

The Houthis are preparing to escalate operations along Yemen’s western coast in an effort to project military power near Bab al-Mandab as fighting expands across several fronts.

Sheba Intelligence has learned that the group has prepared ground forces for possible attacks toward Hays and Mokha and deployed reinforcements to Al-Tuhayta and areas south of Hays. Drone specialists are participating in the preparations, indicating that a larger combined operation may follow.

Shortly after midnight, dozens of Houthi fighters assembled to attack resistance positions north of Al-Haymah in Al-Tuhayta district, according to a Tihama-based field source.

The First Tihama Brigade detected the movement and struck the force before the assault began, disrupting the operation and reportedly inflicting casualties. Artillery exchanges followed in Al-Jabaliyah, northern Al-Haymah and Al-Ghuwayriq.

The Houthis responded with 155 mm artillery, tank fire and a drone launched from Al-Haymah. Resistance forces reportedly brought down the drone using electronic jamming. No independently verified casualty figures were available.

The clashes coincided with military action by government forces along several front lines. Military spokesperson Colonel Majed al-Nuzaili said the operation targeted Houthi positions and capabilities in response to recent attacks in Marib and Hadramawt. He stressed that an attack on one front would be treated as an attack on all government military formations.

The failed assault north of Al-Haymah may have been intended to test defensive readiness, response times and potential weaknesses before a larger offensive toward Hays or Mokha.

These movements carry wider strategic implications. Expanding the Houthi presence along the western coast could increase the group’s capacity to threaten Bab al-Mandab through coordinated ground, missile, drone and maritime operations.

The escalation also fits Iran’s strategy of raising the cost of regional confrontation by threatening energy supplies and international shipping. Tehran appears to be seeking, through the Houthis, leverage around Bab al-Mandab comparable to the pressure it exercises around the Strait of Hormuz.
