Yemen 2025: Interior Ministry Records 20,610 Criminal Cases in Government-Held Areas

An annual statistical report issued by Yemen’s General Directorate of Command and Control at the Ministry of Interior recorded 20,610 criminal cases in 2025 across areas under the internationally recognized government.

According to the report, security authorities cleared 14,487 criminal cases, while 6,123 cases remained uncleared by the end of the year.

The data showed that intentional assault was the most frequently recorded crime, with 4,783 cases, followed by theftwith 4,249 cases, property-related crimes with 2,515 cases, fraud and deception with 1,160 cases, and threats with 969 cases.

At the governorate level, Hadramawt Coast recorded the highest number of criminal cases, with 4,518 cases, followed by Taiz with 3,810, Marib with 3,606, Aden with 2,085, and Lahj with 1,417.

Traffic accidents remained another major public safety challenge. The report documented 3,944 traffic accidents, resulting in 580 deaths, 1,845 serious injuries, and 1,668 minor injuries. Material losses were estimated at more than YER 3.89 billion. Marib topped the list of governorates in traffic accidents, with 1,317 accidents, followed by Taiz with 539 and Lahj with 468.

The report also recorded 1,116 non-criminal incidents, including natural deaths, fires, suicides, drowning cases, accidental firearm incidents, and workplace-related incidents. These incidents resulted in 518 deaths and 235 injuriesover the year.

On the correctional side, the report showed that 5,347 prisoners remained in custody by the end of 2025.

At Yemen’s land, sea, and air entry points, the Ministry of Interior recorded around 3.42 million border-crossing movements during the year, reflecting the scale of administrative and security activity handled by the ministry’s institutions.

On the public services side, the Immigration, Passports and Nationality Authority processed 681,987 transactions, including 680,390 passport-related transactions. Meanwhile, the Civil Status and Civil Registry Authority issued 705,471 smart ID cards and 631,876 electronic certificates.

Overall, the figures point to a year of significant security, administrative, and public safety pressure on Yemen’s Interior Ministry institutions in government-held areas. Criminal case clearance, traffic accidents, non-criminal incidents, prisoner numbers, and border-crossing activity together reflect the broad operational burden facing security and civil institutions in 2025.
